The hardest part of working abroad is rarely the work. It is Sunday afternoon, when the week finally slows down and the quiet reminds you how far away everyone is.
Our members overseas have learned that community does not happen to you, you build it on purpose. It starts embarrassingly small: joining the online huddle even when the time zone is unkind, greeting one kababayan at church or at the grocery, saying yes to the invitation you would normally decline because you are tired.
One member in Dubai told us she treated the Monday huddle like a standing dinner date with family. Same time, camera on, no excuses. Within months, the faces on that screen knew her week better than anyone in her building did.
If you are far from home right now, do not wait until you feel less lonely to reach out. Reach out first, and the loneliness starts to lose its grip. Somewhere in this community there is a table with your name on it, even if for now that table is a video call.
