Saving when money is tight

By Marvin Dizon

Most saving advice is written for people who have extra. Set aside twenty percent, they say, as if the month always cooperates. Real life in a real Filipino household does not work that way, and pretending it does only adds shame to stress.

Start with an amount so small it feels almost silly. Twenty pesos a week is a real savings habit. The point in the beginning is not the amount, it is teaching yourself that some money is not for spending. That identity shift matters more than the peso count.

Separate the money physically. A different account, an envelope, a GCash pocket you do not look at. Money you can see is money you will spend on a hard day, and there will always be hard days.

Finally, be gentle with yourself on the months you cannot save. A missed month is not a failed habit. The habit fails only when you stop returning to it. Savings built slowly, with grace, outlast savings built on pressure.
